Early English books is a series of microfilm reels which consist of primary source documents written in England during two separate time periods. The first series contains documents written from 1475-1640 (call number: PR 1120 .E2) and the second series contains documents written from 1641-1700 (call number: PR 1127 .E2). Each reel contains multiple titles, and each title has a separate bibliographic record in our repository.
When these titles were cataloged we structure these records as “bound with” titles, so that when any one reel of microfilm is checked out to a patron (or is otherwise unavailable), each constituent title on that reel shows up in OneSearch as “unavailable”. This structure can cause some confusion to staff and patrons, so this document aims to familiarize you with how these records will appear in OneSearch, and where to find inventory information for your patrons.
We’ll use the example of Early English books, 1641-1700, Reel 625. This reel contains 21 constituent titles, one of which is “An epitaph upon His Late Majesty, King Charles the II”.
The Early English Microfiche is located in the Microform Collections on Wilson 2nd Floor East.
A OneSearch query for this title gives the following results:
Inventory for this title can be found by clicking on the “Find it” tab:
Note the “Inventory of related” display constant in the first green box. This label is generated by the “bound with” record structure. The next line gives the location of the microfilm reel, as well as its call number. The availability of the reel is reflected in the “Availability” line (2nd green box). A patron interested in this title can see that it is located in our microfilm collection at call number PR 1127 .E2, Reel 625. They can also see that the reel is available for checkout.
Since Early English books reels contain multiple titles, it is helpful for a user to know where a constituent title is located on the reel. This information is on the “Details” tab:
In this display, we see some of the details from the record for “An epitaph upon His Late Majesty…”. The series is displayed with the legend “Related Titles:”. This entry includes both the reel number and the title number for this particular title. A patron interested in this particular title can see that it is the 18th title on reel number 625.
