Firm orders are one-time purchases; the majority of these are books.  Subscriptions refer to anything we make annual payments for to retain access.  Journals, magazines, newspapers, and databases all fall into this category.  Some types of resources, such as streaming media, can be either firm orders or subscriptions, depending on the content and the pricing model.
