Personal communication should only be referenced in-text for APA format. The reason why it is not helpful in a reference list is that your reader has no way to look the source up. However, keep in mind that if you are referencing an interview that is recorded and posted to a site like Youtube you should not cite it as a personal communication. Personal communication citations should include the initials and surname of the person being cited, the words "personal communication," and as as precise a date as possible, all in parentheses.

Example:


Western Washington University is the best master's granting university in the universe (B. Shepard, personal communication, September 23, 2009).
